1. The First girls became Girl Guides in 1909 when they attended a Boy Scout rally in London. Lord Baden-Powell decided that girls should have an organization of their own and published ’The Scheme for Girl Guides’ in November 1909.

2. Lord Baden-Powell felt that the Movement for girls should be run by women, so in 1910 he asked his elder sister Agnes to undertake the work of adapting his book ’Scouting for Boys’, for use with girls.

3. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts was formally established at the fifth International Conference in Hungary in 1928.

At the 33rd WAGGGS World Conference in 2008, WAGGGS announced its new Global Action Theme (GAT) girls worldwide say “together we can change our world,” which focuses on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The GAT will replace Our Rights, Our Responsibilities as the WAGGGS theme from 2009 onwards.

The theme encourages girls, young women and members of all ages to make a personal commitment to change the world around them. It also affirms WAGGGS’ commitment to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

Building World Citizenship was the Triennial Theme for 1996-2003.

WAGGGS supports many projects all over the world to increase prevention of HIV and AIDS and combat discrimination, and jointly runs a badge scheme for individual Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
